Vintage Royal Automatic Vac-Barber Shop Vacuum/Please Read Detsils

Vacuum worked when plugged in. I assume the handle on the side is the on & off, as when I pushed down on it, it went off. I’m not sure if the hose or something else hangs on it to keep it off???
The small piece in the last photo, was inside the unit. I heard something moving around when I lifted it. I am assuming it must be off the mount inside, where the motor is, but motor still sits fine in the casing, and the machine works.
The hose will need some more cleaning, and appears to be stained on the top, see pics. I’m not sure if there’s a piece that’s missing, to connect the hose to the unit??? But that’s how I received the unit, when I bought it.
